5 Tips for Preventing Mobile Home Skirting From Blowing Away

There are many different types of foundation skirting. If you have a heavier option like brick or concrete, the wind may not be too much of a concern. However, lighter-weight skirting like vinyl, metal, or wood may need some extra security if you live in an area with higher winds or natural disasters like hurricanes or tornados. Here are five tips for preventing mobile home skirting from blowing away.

1. Secure the Bottom Track

Adding additional nails, bolts, or screws along the bottom track of your skirting helps keep it in place. High winds often rip skirting up from the bottom, so keeping this part as tightly fastened as possible is a good idea.

2. Install Windrods

Windrods are thin metal poles that slide straight into the seams of your skirting, and people mainly use them with vinyl skirting options. These rods provide additional structure and support to your skirting to keep it in place.

3. Have an Access Panel

One tip for preventing mobile home skirting from blowing away is to avoid unnecessarily disconnecting and reattaching your skirting as much as possible. Installing an access panel allows you to get under your home without removing any panels and loosening their structural integrity. We recommend installing the access panel near your water shut-off valve since that’s what you’re most likely to need.

4. Add Support

You can always create additional support beams before you put your skirting on. We recommend securing some pressure-treated 2x4s to your foundation and then attaching the skirting alongside the new support.

5. Account for Temperature Shifts

While adding bolts or nails to the bottom track of your skirting is a good idea, we don’t recommend doing this on the top portion. Temperature and humidity changes can cause material expansion and contraction. Securing it too tight on the top may cause your skirting to shift, warp, and become less secure when high winds strike.
